If you are a fan of the television show Once Upon a Time, I am sure you have been noticing the makeup especially the evil and bitchy queen. In the episode "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" the queen's make up was a bit subtle compared to previous episodes since her true evilness had not completely evolved. The iciness of her character was well represented by the icy blue tones of eyeshadow and her peering evilness through the exaggerated winged liner. I thought it was a great eye look and decided to do a tutorial on it with similar results.
The colors I chose for this look are the icy light blue, medium metallic silver blue, medium to dark satin brown, and black. The black can be a pencil, gel, cake, or cream.
I used Lola for this tutorial, check her smoky eye look here.
The Eyeshadows
1-Prepped and prime. 2 & 3-I always like to mark the orbital ridge with the satin brown. This makes it much easier to know where everything goes. As you know from my previous tutorials, finding this area remember these tips: #1-Rather than raising your brows up high to mark the orbital ridge, it is better to relax the eye muscle and lift with that area with the finger. This really makes a difference in how the color ends up on the eye when it is relaxed. #2-Remember to use your orbital bone as a guide to mark the orbital ridge. Let the tip of the brush follow the bone and not the lid.
4-Apply the icy light blue shade from lash line to brow bone. 5-Apply more of it on the corner of the eye. 6-Again the yellow mark. This is basically to show that the eyeshadow shouldn't go lower than this area. You want the eyeshadow to look 3D and not flattened out on the eye. Also, a major plus for mature woman since this is the area that can droop the eye.
7-Apply the metallic medium blue shadow onto the lid. 8-Lid color applied. 9-Using the same color, smudge it along the bottom lash line. Make this one wider than usual. Yes, this does meet with the lid color. I start from the inner corner going to the outer corner because I follow the eye as it goes up. If I did this from the lid and just went around. Almost 99% of the time, the brush will follow more into the "yellow" area of the eye making the eye look droopy. 10-The finished look of the eyeshadows.
The Eyeliner
Eyeliner is what will make or break this look. If applied correctly, this major winged liner look will wrap around the eye and look lifted instead of droopy and flattened out.
11-See where the red arrow is pointing at the red dot? That is where the end of the crease line meets the orbital ridge. This area is always important when eyelining, it determines the angle of the liner. A good tool to have for this is a slanted eyeliner brush. The longer end can rest where the "red dot" is, right below the orbital ridge and end of the lashline or outer end of the "corner". (Previous post explains more about the "corner".)
12-From a different angle and I have removed all the eyeshadow except the one on the orbital ridge. 13-Take the slanted liner and line up the outer lash line and the red dot and mark it. This is really similar to enclosing the lid area like in the previous post. 14-Beginnings of the eyeliner.
Since this is an exaggerated winged liner look, the liner needs to be extended onto the orbital ridge. 15 &16-Just make a straight mark. The line should end right before it flattens out to the brow bone. (In the tutorial the line is shown as a straight one. In real life, it will curve due to the bone structure of that area.) 17-Thicken that line all the way down to the lash line. 18-The winged line.
19-Starting from the inner corner line the lash line and connect to the wing liner. 20-The result so far. 21-Add more liner to just get rid of that sharp connection of the lash line and wing.
22 & 23-Finished top liner look. 24-If done right, the liner should pretty much stay out of the "yellow" area.
25-Apply liner to the bottom lash line and allow it to meet just the outer end of the top liner. 26-From the front it should look something like this. The winged end may curve or droop a little more due to your muscle structure (which is normal). 27-Add some lashes and blend with mascara.
